WANTED - a Roller Coaster Ride of Action!

You had to know with a cast like Morgan Freeman, Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy that this wasn't going to be just another Action Thriller... WANTED is a comic book adaptation but unlike Iron Man, which I also loved, this film is rated Adult not PG. It was a full throttal ride and it hits every mark: Plot, Acting and Special Effects. An opening scene hasn't grabbed me like this one since the orignal Matrix!

You may remember James McAvoy, who is perfectly cast as the lead Wesley Gibson, from such British dramas as Atonement, Becoming Jane and The Last King of Scotland.

Here McAvoy plays a self deprecating, over apologetic, bullied cubicle drone prone to anxiety attacks (not unlike another one of my favourite flawed characters: The Narrator vs. Tyler Durdan played by Edward Norton in The Fight Club), who upon discovering he is the son of a notorious killer is assisted on a quest by a Fraternity of Assassins (aka Weapons of Fate), to find out who he is to ultimately take control of his life.

With a tagline like: CHOOSE Your Destiny, we know they have 99 minutes to attempt to turn Gibson from dorky to deadly. Does he do it? Well, I won't ruin it for you - because there is a great twist, but let's just say McAvoy has come a long way from playing Mr. Tumnus the Faun in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion or the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Morgan Freeman plays Sloan, an eerily calm M-Type Puppet Master who interprets a woven Binary Code that gives the Fraternity names or better - targets to assassin. Delivered in only a way that Freeman can do, Sloan explains where the targets come from to Wesley,

“They come out of a necessity Wesley. A necessity to maintain balance in the world. They are orders that must be executed. Entrusted to us so that we might forge stability out of chaos."

Angelina Jolie plays Fox and is back where we like her - cool, tough and sexy. Sure she stretched her acting muscle in A Mighty Heart but this is her bread and butter and I for one was happy to see her back driving fast cars, shooting and kicking butt!

With a theme like: Kill one, Save a Thousand, awesome Sci-Fi photography and it's
2 Fast 2 Furious car stunts (which may have something to do with the writing team of Micahel Brand & Derek Haas having written both) Timur Bekmambetov, the Russian/Kasakh film director's first American film will definitely - in my opinion, solidify him in the Hollywood community. WANTED opened in 22 markets over last weekend and collected $33 million dollars... I predict this will double once the word of mouth spreads.

Here's a line you can take with you as spoken by my new hero Wesley Gibson, "What the @#$%
have YOU done lately?"

To be or not to be - available 24/7?

I don't know about you, but I have a pet peeve when I am spending time with someone and they choose (make no mistake - this is what they are doing - unconsciously or not) to answer their Cel Phone.

It makes me wonder... Does this person not respect the time I have set aside to be with them? I get that this question is my EGO talking - yes, I read A New Earth ;P

OR is this act - perceived as dismissive - not personal at all? Are they simply just programmed to answer the phone?

I notice this compulsion more in a certain generation. My parents are like this... hence they think I am being completely cheeky when they see me not answering my phone when I am with them. They wonder if I don't want to speak in front of them. They wonder if I mute their calls once checking to see who it is... Paranoia sets in. When frankly, I am just trying to be polite! I lack the sense of obligation that they and many other's have and this bothers them.

My Father jokes that I should record a message that says, "Sorry I can't take your call, leave a message so when I am not with someone else or doing anything better than talking to you - I'll call back." You see where I get my cheekiness from!

My parents programming has come from the days before Cel Phones, before Voicemail and even before Answering Machines... When you missed a call - YOU MISSED A CALL! I on the other hand, being part of the generation with the benefits of modern day devices, can be assured that if someone urgently needs to get a hold of me they will leave a message that states just that. We live in different realities.

Back to Phone Etiquette: Sure, there are exceptions to every rule... If you are with someone who has to answer their phone for work - it's understandable - you take what you can get. Plus if you are waiting for a specific call and you make a point of telling whomever you are with that you may be interrupted and that you will have to excuse yourself - well done - I salute you. Share YOUR exceptions, comments or concerns...

My concern is that as a whole we have lost our ability to be present! So rather than just complain here is my request in hopes to bring about change... Disconnect and COMMUNICATE with the one you are with. xo P.

The People That You Meet...

Yesterday my Father and I took the train to Whistler aboard The Whistler Mountaineer (stay tuned for a future post called "Mock the Commentator").

On the return we sat beside another Father & Daughter visiting BC from San Diego... We chatted and I shared what I could remember about tourist activities and attractions, suitable for a 9 year old, from my Concierge days and by the end of our 4 hour trip we exchanged information. Don't you love how RANDOM life can be when you are open to meeting new people?

It turns out that Kartik Seshadri is a "Sitar Virtuoso" who travels the world sharing his music.

Most recently, Seshadri collaborated on the Orion project with the noted composer Philip Glass and the Brazilian group UAKTI with worldwide performances ranging from the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park and Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York to the Cervantino Festival in Mexico and Australia’s Melbourne International Arts Festival.

It was a pleasure to briefly spend time with Kartik and his beautiful daughter Mallika. How inspiring to meet someone who is successful at sharing their talent with the world! I sincerely hope they enjoy the rest of their vacation experience in Vancouver. P.

P.S. Kartik has a My Space Page that lists upcoming concert dates.

HAPPY NEWS! The Shift is here...

As referenced in my post back in 2007: THE GOOD NEWS SHOW!

I was just ahead of my time... If there is anyone who can or is connected to someone who can assist me with creating this vision in Vancouver, please contact me...

Romanian Senate orders Happy News on TV

BUCHAREST (Reuters Life!) - Romania's Senate has ordered television and radio stations to air more "happy" news, arguing too much gloom is making people ill.

According to a draft law which still needs the approval of President Traian Basescu, broadcasters will have to give equal time to "positive" and "negative" issues in their newscasts.

The plan's initiators, a deputy from the ruling Liberal Party and a member of the opposition far-right Greater Romania Party, said negative news has an "extraordinarily harmful and irreversible impact on health".

The Senate approved the law unanimously. One senator, from the opposition Social Democrat Party (PSD), argued newscasts show too much of the "dark side of life".

"I have not seen news about farming that would show how to tend to crops, I have seen nothing positive from the economy or education," Petre Daea was quoted saying by HotNews website.

Media watch groups and the state broadcast regulator CNA have urged Basescu to veto the bill. Romania, which joined the European Union last year, is struggling with widespread poverty and corruption.

Write a Movie in just 10 minutes!

I recently picked up Pilar Alessandra's ON THE PAGE DVD... It's SO good!

I first was introduced to Pilar last year when I was a part of a Women In Film Program called Flash Forward. One of the women in the program was a writer and told me I should try to go to one of her classes while I was in town... I didn't make it but I have been communicating with her via email for over a year now.

Who is she? She is the former Senior Story Analyst for DreamWorks and Radar Pictures who is now an independant Script Consultant who lives and works in LA and travels around the country - even Canada offering Screenwriting Classes. She is absolutely LOVELY and I am so... excited we are going to meet in person! If there is ever a person I would wish to be my Mentor it is Pilar. She is bright, articulate, creative and making a living doing what she loves - writing AND helping others acheive their dreams... SO Great!

Did you think I was teasing you with my Title? Here's an exercise for you to "Write a movie in just 10 minutes":

  • Begin by BRAINSTORMING...
  • There are 3 options to focus on when Brainstorming: Character, Event or Premise.
  • If we choose Character - Is it a man or a woman?
  • What is their flaw?
  • What is the worst situation this character could be in?
  • What is the 1st action this character would take in this situation?
  • How might the action backfire?
  • Who would be the least likely person(s) to team up or help the character? And why?
  • What new action might our character and his supporting characters take?
  • Who or what might get in the way of this new action? And why?
  • How might the main character's flaw be turned into a skill, to help himself and the other characters?
  • What is the final least likely action our character could take to redeem their flaw?
  • The End!
Think of all the movies you have seen that follow this formula... Sister ACT comes immediately to my mind. Send me a comment with what rings a bell for you!

If you thought that exercise was fun - it was only the 1st step... How could you not want to learn more?! Join me with Pilar in Vancouver this July 13th. She is offering an all day workshop at the Canadian Film & Television Production Association. Tickets can be purchased at Biz Books.

If you can't make it... You can buy her DVD on line at the Writers Store or you can listen to her Podcast!

Chris Jordon: Visual Images grounded with Compelling Data...

Another First... A Life Coach! Part I

What better time to get some coaching when you are in the midst of a career/lifestyle change?!

Ron Helman is my new GURU...

How did we meet? Well, it's a funny story... My girlfriend Heather who is a Magazine Stylist asked me if while I had some spare time - could I assist her on a shoot for Oprah at Home Magazine? Would I??? Of course, who wouldn't - how cool... that was until I was reminded of the "hurry up and wait" reality of my Set Dec past in the Film Industry. In any case, I've learned to be grateful and to NEVER look a gift horse in the mouth! Plus... you just never know what one thing leads to. My life has been random enough to have learned this lesson time and time again. Be OPEN to possibility...

At the cabin, we were styling on Bowen Island we met Ron and his lovely wife Pamela Markoya... This great couple from New Mexico were staying at the main house on a Home Exchange (Funny, I happen to be a member of SHEI). Well having worked with visitors to our corner of the world for the last decade, I couldn't help give as much advice as possible about Vancouver & Whistler to ensure that their experience was the best it could be. Hence we bonded... we exchanged email addresses and it was then that I received the website addresses for both Pamela & Ron and discovered that Pamela was a talented artist and Ron - was not only an accomplished jazz musician but an established Life Coach! Who new?!

Ron was kind enough to offer me a Coaching Session to explore the possibilities of having a Life Coach. We exchanged a few emails and set up a time to chat for an hour... Today I called him just to see if I needed to prepare anything. He said I should think about what I wanted to get from the call... That for the most part it will be about getting to know each other better to see if we "fit". Though he mentioned that after checking out my blog, he considered me to be a Creative, Honest and Forthright individual and that this "Profile" type was one that he enjoyed working with due to our attraction to speed... when focusing on goal execution.

Ooo... I liked the sound of that - SPEED! So I thought about my immediate and long term goals:

  • I want to live a life of abundance! I want to make a great living being Me - a writer and an explorer.
  • I want to contribute to my family, friends and communities.
  • I want to have a home in Kauai, spend summers in Vancouver and Christmas in Whistler.
  • I want to be in a committed relationship and create a family.
  • I want to be in excellent health so I can enjoy all my good fortune.

Next I looked on Ron's website... and found some aspirations I was aligned with:

  • Turn on your ability to create the results you want.
  • To shift from reacting to events to being proactive in your life.
  • Make a move from thinking about challenges to taking positive action.
  • Move out of old restrictive patterns into new action and effectiveness.
  • Accomplish more with less effort and have much more space for joy and fulfillment in your life.
  • Get on-track for financial well being for life.
  • Aligning your livelihood with your direction in life.
  • Expand your vision about what is possible in your life.

I can't wait for our call! Stay tuned... xo P.

Avenue Q

"Subversive and Uproarious!"– The New Yorker

A friend was kind enough to invite me to
Avenue Q in Seattle at the majestic Paramount Theatre.

Like my entire generation, I grew up watching Sesame Street... So what wouldn't appeal about a musical that candidly discusses the after college real life choices for a group of 30 something's - not unlike our favourite Friends but with adorable puppets, a Tony Award winning cast and subject matter considered taboo for prime time.

I LOVED this show... and highly recommend it for all - ADULTS that is.

Synopsis: AVENUE Q is not the most upmarket of New York streets, and is about as far away from Park Avenue as you can get, but it is home to some lively and off the wall characters performed by an unholy comedic alliance of humans and puppets! Princeton, a bright-eyed college graduate, has just moved to this neighbourhood as he desperately tries to follow his dreams and discover his ever-elusive purpose in life. A tiny bank balance, the distraction of a busty blonde and a variety of weird and wonderful friends and neighbours lead Princeton on a hilarious story of self-discovery. Life may "suck" on AVENUE Q but being jobless, homeless, politically incorrect, having sex (whether hetero, homo or porno… and that’s just the puppets) are just some of the topics featured in the songs of this show.

from The Seattle Times
Of all the themes in this show: Sex, Commitment, Racism, Sexuality, Unemployment, The Homeless and yes, even the Internet...
this was my favourite - the elusive search for:

PURPOSE,
IT'S THAT LITTLE FLAME
THAT LIGHTS A FIRE
UNDER YOUR ASS...

PURPOSE,
IT KEEPS YOU GOING STRONG
LIKE A CAR WITH A FULL
TANK OF GAS...

EVERYONE ELSE HAS
A PURPOSE
SO WHAT'S MINE?

Oh, look! Here's a penny!
It's from the year I was born!
IT'S A SIGN!

PURPOSE,
GOTTA FIND OUT,
DON'T WANNA WAIT!
GOT TO MAKE SURE THAT MY
LIFE WILL BE GREAT!
GOTTA FIND MY PURPOSE
BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE.

For more Avenue Q song lyrics check out All Musicals!

Or pick up the CD at Amazon.com
Note: Parental Advisory due to Explicit Lyrics.

To learn How the Show Came to Life, check out this article written by Beth Cox who interviewed Jeff Marx the co-creator in 2007. It's a GREAT story of tenacity and being open to possibilities that you didn't think of.

Coming to Toronto's Elgin Theatre July 29th - 31st this summer!
Thank-you, Brad.

P.S. I was referred to as the "Vancouver Girlfriend" funny...
See the show - you'll get the joke ;P

JUNO!

I recently saw this quirky little gem of a film again and I must say it gets better each time I watch it!

I couldn't wait for this film to come out in DVD on April 15th. I only saw a few movies when living in Kauai and this was so worth the trek!

Here are just a few of it's memorable lines:
*Geese Banana... Shut your friggen GOB!

*Momma Bear, your Eggo is Prego... Pay for that pee stick when you're done. Don't think it's yours because you marked it with your urine. What's the prognosis fertile myrtle?

*The little pink plus sign is so unholy... That ain't no etcha sketch, this is one doodle that can't be undid, home skillet.

*Honest to Blog?!

*It's probably just a Food Baby.

*All babies want to get borned!

*Despirately Seeking Spawn or Baby Starved Wing-nuts

*Great in Chair!

*Pork Sword

*East Jesus no where...

*One BIG fat sack of NO.

*He is the Cheese to my Macaroni.

My favourite Quote is when Juno is talking to her Father about Relationships: The best thing you can do is find a person who loves you for exactly what you are... Good mood, bad mood, ugly, pretty, handsome, what have you. The right person will still think the sun shines out of your ass! That's the kind of person that's worth staying with.

xo P.

P.S. This movie was filmed in Vancouver, Kitsilano and Ladner. If you are interested in seeing what other films were shot here, check out: The Best (and Worst) Movies Filmed in Vancouver.

I Promise Myself...

To be so strong that nothing can disturb my peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness, and prospertity to every person I meet.

To make all my friends feel that there is something worthwhile in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make my optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best
and to expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of
others as I am about my own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the
greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful expression at all times and give a smile
to every living creature I meet.

To give so much time to improving myself that I
have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear,
and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

To think well of myself and to proclaim this fact to the world,
not in loud words, but in great deeds.

To live in the faith that the whole world is on my side,
so long as I am true to the best that is in me.

Vancouver's Second Beach...

Before I found my paradise aka Kauai... This was where I would come to escape. I would walk the seawall from the Burrard Street Bridge, meander past those beaching it at English Bay and work my way around the corner to the Second Beach Pool. Here I would pay my $2.50 and swim in a glacier blue coloured pool while looking out at our harbour - too cold and frankly too polluted to expose my skin to.

Today my pool, that had been a familiar friend, made me feel sad, because now I know there is something, somewhere better. A place where I don't have to be caged, expose myself to chlorine or hold my breath before plunging into 65 degree water... A place where I can easily wade in, float like a jelly fish, roll onto my back and make pictures out of the puffy cumulus clouds. Today, I am home sick :{ P.

The Pursuit of Happiness!

This is my 5th post on the subject of Happiness... I like that I am not the only person looking for answers ;P

Sunday night on 60 Minutes they ran a story about, "Little Denmark, with its five-and-a-half million people, is the happiest country in the world", says a study done by an English University. Morley Safer reports why the Danes are so happy and explores why the U.S. is way down the list...
[Note: Canada is no. 8]

Is having "low expectations" the key to Happiness?

If that's the case, I'm doomed... I am reminded of an episode of Home Improvement when Tim Taylor is asked to pick a number - he chooses 6,486,267! I too - think BIG, and like my American friends - I want it all! If that makes for highs and lows, so be it. I would rather live a life of failures and successes than a life of mediocrity.

Why Blog?

Ah... The inevitable question... This came from an unlikely source - one of my best friends. I assumed it would have come from a family member but surprisingly, and gratefully - no, they have been incredibly supportive. Not to say that the question wasn't supportive - and frankly, I have asked myself this more than once. Why?

Possibly because I can't keep up with my growing communication list, having friends and family around the world plus the reality of living in two places?

Or is it that my compulsive need to "share" is stifled by being transient at the moment. Not having immediate access - due to time zone restrictions, to those familiar friends who act as sounding boards to my daily thoughts, insights, successes, failures and yes - rants?

Or is it that I am presently without a partner, a confidant and I am using this medium as a surrogate pillow-talker? That said, with over 300 posts in draft - I have yet to open myself completely in this public forum. I have been holding off making the decision to show the world how truly vulnerable I can be, which I believe is not a bad thing. I think it's healthy to fear the oh so easy "over-share" that has bitten bloggers of the past in the ass! i.e. Emily Gould

Or is it that I can no longer contain the overwhelming amount of information that is passed my way each day and I figure that if I pass it down the chain like a baton, all the while recording it's details that it won't get lost in a sea of my own thoughts.

Or did I just need a place to Spew? Opening a dialogue about issues with family, friends, friends of friends, co-workers, acquaintances and the scariest of all - the few souls that find their way here who carry the scary label of "strangers".

Or... as written by Emily Gould in an article for NY Times Magazine 05/25/08:

I think most people who maintain blogs are doing it for some of the same reasons I do: they like the idea that there’s a place where a record of their existence is kept — a house with an always-open door where people who are looking for you can check on you, compare notes with you and tell you what they think of you. Sometimes that house is messy, sometimes horrifyingly so. In real life, we wouldn’t invite any passing stranger into these situations, but the remove of the Internet makes it seem O.K.
Or simply put, this act is helping me get over the fear of letting poeple read my writing while this commitment allows me to build the muscle of completion.

Actually, it's all of the above... Stay tuned. P.

JUNE 8th OCEAN Day!

To Celebrate World Ocean Day I am going to spread the word about a new series called:

"For years we’ve been reading about a patch of garbage the size of Texas floating in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, ingeniously dubbed the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Basically, any trash that gets dumped in the water rides the currents to this one spot and joins an ever-increasing flotilla of crap! For all the breathless accounts of the mess and its impact on the area’s sealife, however, no one seemed to have a picture of the buildup. In order to sate our own curiosity, VBS joined the crew of a research vessel studying the trash and sailed out into one of the most remote spots of open water in the world, the North Pacific Gyre, in search of this mythical garbage island. What we discovered once we got there was an ecological disaster beyond any of our expectations and possibly the single worst thing human beings have done to the planet and ourselves." Thomas Morton.

CALIFORNICATION!

Most of you know by now, I have come home to Vancouver from Kauai for the summer to visit family & friends, do some contract work and focus on a career change... That said, leaving my paradise island wasn't easy, but I thought "hey - it will be summer - right?!"

I envisioned sipping cocktails on a patio in English Bay, Seawall biking, Second Beach swimming maybe even some North Shore hiking but NOoo... I am very much indoors, fighting my 3rd cold in less than a month and dividing my time writing, doing hot yoga to warm my numb bum and catching up on the movies and televison I missed in 2007.

My new obsession is Californication! My good friend Dave, said I would love it and he has never steered me wrong. Here is a clip from the Season Premier:

Okay that was a TAD dark... maybe it matches my mood induced by the weather BUT as a fan of Elton John, David Dochovny (who I have forgiven for dissing Vancouver, maybe because I'm in the midst of a rant about the rain myself) and of course - tragically flawed male characters with a heart seeking redemption, I LOVE this series... It's not dark really - truly, I watched all 12 episodes in one - 6 degree day (that's 48 degrees for my American friends), I couldn't get enough and can't wait for the second season!

The writing is superb and the acting well, Dochovny won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of novelist Hank Moody, "who struggles to balance his often-crazy life with raising his 13-year-old daughter, while still harboring feelings for his ex-girlfriend. This series follows his obsession with truth-telling and his self-destructive behavior as both alternately destroy and enrich his career."

I predict this is going to be the Sex & The City for both married and single MEN. The boy-banter is as quick as the Gilmore Girls but as dirty as Nip Tuck... Any gals out there tired of summer sitcom reruns or the romantic comedy of the month, download it now... you could learn a thing or two about how men talk and act when you're not around - brutal but entertaining. Bonus, you'll arm yourself with the knowledge of the meaning of some of the character's made up words, which I guarantee you will be hearing around the water cooler this fall - like "broner" ;P

P.S. IMDB Trivia...
References are made to actors from the TV show "Dawson's Creek" (1998). Katie Holmes is referenced along with real-life husband Tom Cruise in the movie 'A Crazy Little Thing Called Love' based on Hank's book. James Van Der Beek is referenced on a wedding invitation card that reveals Karen's last name to be 'Van Der Beek'. Writers/Executive Producers Tom Kapinos and Gina Fattore both worked on "Dawson's Creek" (1998).

New Possibilities...

The thing about labels is they are not me? I was given most of these... Some are just roles I played. They are all just descriptions. Descriptions of my gender, my appearance, my nationality, my functions, my state of being, my hobbies, my skills, my professions but who am I really?

I was at a place of asking myself that question back in 1992 when I met my ex-husband. It's funny when you are searching for answers and someone crosses your path offering new possibilities how you don't realize how vulnerable you are. That path I took led to a lot of different labels... none of which I regret, but now I have come full circle and am once again asking the question "Who am I"?

I was once asked, "What did I WANT to do?" and I responded, "I want to be ME." Not satisfied with this answer, I was then asked, "How do I want to make a LIVING?" and I responded that, "I wanted to be paid to BE - ME!"

It's apparent by my various job titles and actual careers that I most definitely am employable... That said, my present break from a 9-5 reality, with the loving support of my family and friends is to give me time to just BE and realize my goal - to be paid to BE - ME! I feel blessed and grateful to have the time and opportunity for such a journey, thank-you to you all!
